I see commercials about bullying in the schools and often am brought back to some terrible things which have happened as a result of bullying. Before cyber-bullying even existed, there was the Columbine Massacre. Teens who had been teased to the breaking point ended up snapping and blasting away their classmates. This was a direct result of unchecked and very preventable circumstances.
These days, we see events such as the Virginia Tech Massacre and so many fingers are pointed at "crazy" people and more rights are needlessly stripped against persons with mental illnesses. Why? Because its easier to remove the people then it is to rehabilitate them. Lock them up, throw away the key, and forget about them then it all goes away right? No. Quite the opposite. The wounds fester and they are released, and commit worse acts against society.
I will not apologize for saying that Virginia Tech is fully responsible for the curse it brought against itself. The young man tried time and time again to seek help. They turned him away or ignored his pleas for help. Allow me to reiterate this point that I include in much of my writing: This is now 2012, people. It is far past the time where racism and hate should exist in our world. It never has been and never will be the way to live as fellow human beings.
Being someone who comes from a family that has deep racism embedded in its beliefs of many of its members, it was an unnecessary struggle as a child to overcome such disgusting hate and ignorance. Trying to "fit in" is hard enough without having to deal with such things as a child. I clearly remember my first crush being a cute little middle-eastern girl when I was in first or second grade. I was made fun of just for talking to her. This was 1984-85. The teasing and bullying existed then, but technology played no role what so ever. It was still bad enough and left emotional scars which took me years to heal.
Being a man who is deeply spiritual, I will say that it sickens me to know what beauty the universe has provided for us all, and how terribly it is abused and taken for granted. We live in monumental times without a doubt. For a number of reasons, we all should count our blessings and take none for granted. Love all. Even those who wrong us. No law states we are required to include them in our lives. Just that we should forgive them and move on with our lives.
In closing, I will say that everyone should be far more aware of their surroundings. If someone looks troubled, what would it hurt to reach out to them and ask if they want to talk about their troubles. Selflessness is free and should be doled out in large portions. Karma always comes through. I promise. Blessings to you all. Peace, Love, and the best of luck and happiness in this exciting new year of 2012.
